1972 Pontiac Trans Am
1972 was an unusual year for American cars. Due to the UAW strikes in the beginning of the year, and 1973's emissions and safety requirements looming, some great models saw very limited production. Thousands of Formulas and Trans Ams were scrapped at the plant, when GM realized that it would be too late to ship them to the dealers as 72's, and that they wouldn't be compliant as 73's. Thus, 1972 had the second-lowest output of Trans Ams in the line's history, with a total production of 1,286 cars, all of them equipped with a 455-HO, 828 automatics like this one. You'll notice on this site that we've restored three of these cars. This one received a full clip-off restoration. In a modern unit-bodied car such as this, it is common to mistakenly call this a "frame-off", even though there is no conventional frame to the vehicle. Resting at the border or concours-quality, with all engine and interior details accurate, it is still a drivable street car and sees regular highway miles |
