1972 Pontiac Trans Am 455 HO Print E-mail
Pulled from another out of state shop that was performing a VERY  long restoration on it, the owner finally decided to cut his losses and get the car to where it could be finished and finished correctly.
Front view. Park lamp fillers are missing as is Pontiac grille nameplate
Spoiler fit to fender is a little large, closeup of missing park lamp fillers
  Wrinkled decal... uh oh!
Hard to see but there are quite a few waves in the fender. The whole car is inconsistent in the body work.
Door is yellower then the fender
  See the door color difference?

Once the proper wheels and tires were installed, it became painfully apparent that the wrong springs were installed. The engine compartment splash shields also were not installed. The splash shields are rubber and are stapled to the inner aprons. These shields keep the engine from getting the water splashed by the suspension so it doesn't stall. This is an important, but often overlooked part.
Door hinges were adjusted to better set the doors to the proper height
The 100 pound doors are not easy to get right.
Here is what a good and proper body gap looks like. It is details like this that take a lot of time but pay off in a big way. Notice the top of the door and fender and how nicely they line up now.
Same thing for the drivers side. The lines are now much more consistent.
After much persuasion, the front flare is now sitting nice and flush against the fender. This makes the look much more fluid.
The right flare fought us a little more and will require repainting or the flare and center spoiler.
Upon closer investigation, we found out that the previous shop had installed the decal incorrectly and had discovered their mistake. They tried to cover it up by cutting the decal which resulted in the decal looking wrinkled. The only way to fix this is to replace the decal. We have to let the owner make a decision on this one as it is a costly process.
Fresh out of the paint booth, we are now replacing the coil springs with the proper height units.
After replacement of the springs, the front suspension now sits where it should. It will settle a little more once some miles are put on.
The rear body filler panel has been painted and polished.
Polishing of the body continues. Nice shine coming up after a thorough wet sanding and polishing.
New hood decal and nose bird have been properly installed.
The upper plastic radius support panels for the door trim reveals broken parts. This is why the door panels do not fit right. Apparently the prior shop just failed to sweat the details on this job.
