1966 Mercury Cyclone GT Cvt 390 V8 Pace Car Print E-mail
Resting comfortably in Virginia for the past decade or so, this very unusual and rare 390 CID V8 equipped Pace Car comes to us for a proper restoration.
Here we are just beginning to remove the trim
Another view of this unusual car
  Interior  with later wood wheel
  Seats look good.
  Front trim is removed
Fenders and hood are removed. Drivers door is stripped
Left quarter reveals some bondo. We'll have to dig into it soon to see what is lurking underneath.
Right door reveals some past work
Front fenders stripped down nicely. There is some bondo on the lower edges.
The panel in between the top and trunk lid is rather thickly coated with bondo. That bothers us.
Left quarter is compeltely stripped revealing some small areas of concern.
Driver side door is stripping nicely revealing good strong virgin metal
Left side view as stripping progresses.
Door had some minor problems but it worked out.
Minor patch had to be made for the fender
Here is the body in prime
  Hidden rocker rot.
The 390 has been plucked out of it's comfortable berth
  Power steering is leaking everywhere.
C6 transmission has also been removed.
The rust devil never sleeps. We found it here in the left wheel house and rocker area.
The floor pans that had been haphazardly installed previously have been properly finished out.
Under the rear seat floor pan area has been patched.
Cracking in the transmission hump area has been resolved.
Passenger floor was rotted so we will be replacing it.
More rot found in the left rear area under the seat.
We have made a new replacement pan for the front floor.
Underside of the new pan replacement.
New power steering ram and cyliner plus motor is installed
Since we can not find a replacement fuel tank, we will have to reuse the original one. We'll have to scrape and grind the undercoating off.
Here is the tank after being cleaned and repainted. Unfortunately, there is a minor dent in the tank that will have to stay.
We sourced the rare Cyclone GT valve covers, rechromed them, painted them and installed them.
