One should always be very careful when contemplating an auto purchase, especially at a distance. We see a number of cars that are purchased through the internet. The reason? Mainly because they look good in pictures. The image “http://static.flickr.com/20/71901567_a7db6a2c6d_m.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors. If you look at our 65 GTO that is shown on our site that is undergoing a restoration, you can see what I am talking about. That car looks great in pictures. Up close, not so great. When we stripped it down, there was a load of bondo and fiberglassed rust in various parts of the body. Very masterful application of body filler can make a car look great.

We had a 70 Superbird come to our facility several years ago that even had metal particles mixed in the VERY extensive amount of filler that was applied all over the body to cover the rust and hail damage the car had suffered in the past. The requisite magnet stuck to it, so the potential buyer figured he had a good one and purchased it on the spot. Even while trying to exercise due diligence, he still got shafted. The car started falling apart after just a short 6 months and required close to $100,000 worth of repairs in replacement of the sheetmetal. We even had to make a new hood due to the amount of hail damage it had.

It is worthwhile to pay an expert to look at any car prior to purchase. The money you spend could potentially save you many thousands of dollars in rust or substandard repairs just to get the car back to where you thought it would be when you first purchased it. I know that emotion and impulse buying get in the way of logic but it is best to slow down and do the right thing to yourself. If the seller has nothing to hide, then there should never be an issue with holding the car for the few days it takes to line someone up to inspect it.
