We always test drive our cars once they are finished to make sure there are not any issues. We had a scraping noise as the car would brake, so we removed the left drum and found the former shop had also failed to do the proper job on the brakes. The big shiny mark is from rubbing on the brake line. The right front drum could not be turned since it is BENT.
The culprit is the incorrect brake line fitting. It is sticking out to the point that it is rubbing on the brake drum. This flattening occurred in 80 miles of driving. Not too much further, it would of rubbed through and sprung a leak causing the fluid to spray all over the shoes and causing brake system failure. Not a pretty sight. We are pulling the entire brake system apart to make sure the brakes are safe.
We have all the brake drums properly resurfaced now. We also have resurfaced the brake linings, replaced and repacked the front wheel bearings and taken it for a test drive. The car stops really well now! Simple items overlooked or improperly done could possibly yield devastating results. Brakes are not to minimized or done halfway. This could have been a catastrophe, especially since this car is going on a cross country rallye on June 24! See greatrace.com or Hemmings Motor News for information and to follow our customer and see how he fairs! His car is car #61. Is that a coincidence or a grand plan? 1961 imperial, the license plates end in 961 and his car number is 61. Stay tuned!
The final items are gone over. The grille ornament opening is painted red.
